Layers are laid down at different angles, so textures move one way on one layer, then another way on the next, and so on. While wood tends to shrink and expand with moisture in the grain, alternating layers dampen this movement, making the #plywood more dimensionally stable than regular 2×4s. The composition and material of #plywood make it less prone to warping, twisting, cracking, breaking and shrinking. The number of layers of #plywood is at least three layers, and generally the more layers the better.
